The temporary Belmont School was built in August 1997. On New Years Day, 1998, fire destroyed part of this building. The first, second, and third grade classrooms were destroyed, along with the kitchen, lunchroom, and computer lab. Classes at Belmont continued using other rooms not destroyed by the fire, until the damaged rooms were replaced. The students and teachers of Belmont School received many donations to help them recover from the fire. Thank you to everyone who helped.

The new school, Phoenix Elementary, built on the site of the old Belmont School, serves students from both Belmont and Lincoln schools. Lincoln School served the Lincoln Drive neighborhood and was also torn down because of flood damage.

Phoenix School opened for classes in August, 1998, although work on parts of the building was not completed until November,1998.
